Nuscience wins Factory of the Future Award 2017

mon, 6 feb 2017
On February 2nd 2017 the leading lights of Belgian industry gathered for the third edition of the Factory of the Future Awards in Brussels. During this event Nuscience received the Award “Factory of the future 4.0” for its state-of-the-art factory in Drongen.

Nuscience is the very first company within the feed sector in Belgium to win this award. The expert jury was impressed by our vision of growth, competitiveness & sustainability. They embraced the in-house project realization of the new factory, making the difference in our sector through the digitalization of the factory right from the work floor.

What is “The Factory of the Future” Award?

The factory of the future is an initiative of “Made Different” a Belgian government organization, which puts forward-looking manufacturers who systematically take up the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution - the digitalization - into the spotlight. They supply products with high value added and are flexible enough to respond to swiftly changing market demand. This also enables them to continue playing a major role in a dynamic worldwide manufacturing network. Being open-minded about new business models, Factories of the Future fully embrace digitized production processes, by carefully handling energy and materials and exploiting the potential of modern production technologies. Besides technological innovation, social innovation is also high on their agendas, with special attention paid to staff involvement, creativity and autonomy in a human-oriented approach.

The intensive selection procedures

Nuscience started as one of the 16 candidates and was selected as laureate with 4 other companies. The audit, executed by experts of Agoria and Sirris, external business and university consultants, and two former winners of the Award, evaluated several transformations: Manufacturing Technologies, End-to-end Engineering, Digitalization, Human Centered Production, Production Network, Eco Production and Smart Production Systems. Nuscience scored excellent in each of these fields.

This transformation is based on deploying state-of-the-art production devices.

Manufacturing companies develop their own products and corresponding services depending on the complete value chain. This means an integrated design approach regarding processes such as sales, production, use of virtual models and simulations is crucial in this respect.

In the factory of the future, operational processes have been digitised and connected with the internet. The impact of different possible decisions is gauged in advance. A fusion of the real and digital world is on its way.

Employees are a significant asset for anchoring production locally. Employee involvement in the future development of their company is crucial.

Companies evolve from being solo players into networked organisations, where the risk and capital are shared over the network. An optimal eco-system of suppliers and partners results in flexible collaborative relationships.

A sustainable production system considers each phase of a product's life cycle, from acquiring the materials, production and usage, to disposing of the waste. Production systems are also able to close the materials cycle.

Nuscience hopes to inspire other companies to take steps to become a Factory of the Future and will open its doors for guided tours.
